Gokarna is one of the best places in India for an authentic yoga retreat, offering a rare combination of traditional practice, beachside tranquility, and a genuine retreat atmosphere that larger yoga destinations like Rishikesh or Bali can no longer provide. The town is a pilgrimage site, not a tourist hub, and that distinction shapes everything about the experience.

yoga schools compete loudly for your attention on every street, or Goa, where the party culture constantly pulls against any attempt at stillness, Gokarna occupies a uniquely peaceful middle ground. It's accessible — a direct transfer from Goa airport — but remote enough to genuinely disconnect. There are no shopping malls, no nightclubs, no entertainment tourism infrastructure. For people who actually want a retreat rather than a yoga-flavored holiday, this is a significant advantage.

Namaste Yoga Farm has been operating in Gokarna for 19 years, founded by Oliver from Germany and Luisa from Spain. The retreat is built around traditional yoga teachings — Hatha, Sivananda, and Yin — taught in an open-air shala. During the yoga season, from 1 November to 31 March, yoga is complimentary for guests who book directly (morning class 8:00–9:30, afternoon class 16:00–17:30; one yoga class a day per guest, depending on availability and prior arrangement – please ask us before booking), with occasional Yoga Nidra at 18:00. Outside this period there are no scheduled complimentary classes. All mats and props are provided.

The property has 15 accommodations — 7 cottages, 6 rooms, and 2 treehouses — with rates from €80 per unit per night (treehouses), €90 (Garden View Rooms) and €100 (cottages and Mountain View Rooms); we confirm the exact price for your dates. Breakfast is served every day (included depending on your rate), and during the yoga season guests who book directly can join one complimentary yoga class a day, in the morning or afternoon, depending on space and prior arrangement.

FAQ

How long should I stay in Gokarna for a yoga retreat? A minimum of 7 days is recommended. A daily 90-minute class produces real results within a week, and most guests wish they'd booked longer. 10–14 days is the sweet spot.

Is Gokarna safe for solo female travelers? Yes. Gokarna is a traditional temple town with a conservative local culture, which makes it one of the safer places in India for solo women. The retreat atmosphere also means you're surrounded by like-minded guests rather than navigating a busy tourist scene alone.

Is Gokarna better than Rishikesh for yoga? Depends on your goal. Rishikesh has more options for teacher training and intensive study programs. Gokarna — and specifically a retreat like Namaste Yoga Farm — offers something harder to find: an unhurried environment where the practice itself is the focus, with experienced teachers and a schedule designed around your wellbeing rather than throughput.

Good to know: From 1 November through 31 March, yoga is complimentary for guests who book directly – one class a day per guest, depending on space and prior arrangement. Booking through a platform? Please ask us first – complimentary yoga is only included if we have confirmed it before you book. Outside this period, Namaste Yoga Farm operates primarily as peaceful holiday accommodation without scheduled complimentary yoga classes. Guests do not need to practise yoga to stay.
